New York City MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) or New York City Bus routes has a letter before the number. The letter stands for the borough (or neighborhood of New York City). There are five boroughs in New York City, Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. For the bus route, the letter before the number means:
- B - Brooklyn
- Bx - Bronx
- M - Manhattan
- Q - Queens
- S - Staten Island
For example, the bus route M20 means that the bus route is in Manhattan, and the bus route Bx12 means that the bus route is in the Bronx.
